Premarket stock scanner guide

Best premarket stock scanners: use metrics that actually exist before the bell.

Premarket scanning is not regular-session scanning shifted earlier. Data availability, liquidity, and metric definitions change before the open.

Premarket scanning has a different data problem

Before the regular session, many traders care about gap size, premarket price change, premarket volume, price, float/liquidity context, and news catalysts. Some regular-session indicators do not calculate the same way—or at all—during premarket.

A specific Trade Ideas RVOL limitation matters

Trade Ideas’ Relative Volume filter documentation states that its RVOL filter does not calculate during premarket. If you set a minimum RVOL above 1, the company warns that you will not receive premarket alerts and Top Lists will be blank. That means a premarket scan should not blindly reuse a regular-session RVOL rule.

A simple scanner-selection test

Take the same five premarket conditions you actually use and recreate them in each candidate platform. Then compare how quickly the results update, whether extended-hours fields behave as expected, how easily you can save the configuration, and how the list transitions into regular-session alerts or charts. This reveals more than a generic feature table.

Also verify which metrics are unavailable before the open. A scanner with many regular-session filters can still be a poor premarket fit if the fields you rely on do not calculate during extended hours.

What a useful premarket scanner needs

  • Extended-hours data appropriate to the market you trade
  • Gap or premarket change filters
  • Premarket volume/activity measures
  • Price and liquidity controls
  • Saved configurations
  • A clean handoff from premarket list to opening-session alerts

Tool fit

Trade Ideas is strong when the premarket list needs to transition into real-time opening-session alerts. Finviz Elite currently includes real-time data with premarket and after-hours sessions and may be sufficient for screen-and-review workflows. TradingView is relevant when the premarket screen needs to live directly inside a chart-centered workspace.

Build the opening handoff

The highest-value workflow is not simply “find gappers.” It is premarket context → shortlist → define the opening event you care about → switch from a list to an event-driven alert after the bell. That handoff prevents the premarket list from becoming a static pile of symbols.
