Trading workflow

How to find stocks to day trade without scanning the whole market manually.

Use a funnel: define the universe → detect unusual participation or movement → build a short watchlist → wait for your event → validate the process.

Step 1: define the universe before the setup

Start with objective constraints such as market, price range, liquidity, and whether extended-hours activity matters. The purpose is not to predict which stock will win; it is to remove symbols you would never trade so later alerts are relevant.

Step 2: find evidence that attention is concentrated

Price movement by itself can be noisy. Volume, relative volume, gaps, and other participation measures help identify symbols receiving unusual market attention. Use them as context, not standalone buy/sell signals.

Step 3: turn the list into a watchlist

A scanner should reduce the market, not replace analysis. Review the small set of candidates for context: prior-day levels, premarket structure, catalyst/news where relevant, liquidity, spreads, and whether the symbol fits the strategy you are prepared to execute.

Step 4: switch from discovery to event alerts

Once a candidate is on the watchlist, stop asking “what else is moving?” and define the event that would make you re-evaluate it: a new high, opening-range break, reclaim, volume expansion, or another strategy-specific condition. This reduces the temptation to chase every new scanner result.

Step 5: validate the workflow before trusting it

Paper trading is useful for measuring alert frequency, false-positive load, decision latency, and whether your rules can be followed consistently. Backtesting can test historical rule behavior under its assumptions. Neither guarantees profitable live results.

A one-screen morning workflow

Keep the first pass intentionally small: one premarket or opening list, one chart/context view, and one place for event alerts. The scanner should answer “which few symbols deserve preparation?” rather than continuously replacing the watchlist with whatever is moving most recently.

After the watchlist is set, use new scanner results selectively. A late-arriving symbol can still qualify, but it should pass the same universe, participation, liquidity, and event rules as the original list. This prevents discovery software from turning the session into constant attention switching.
