What paper trading can test well
Paper trading can reveal whether alerts arrive at a manageable rate, whether you can evaluate a candidate before conditions change, whether your entry/exit rules are explicit, and whether the scanner produces the kind of symbols your strategy was designed for.
What simulation cannot reproduce perfectly
Fills, slippage, market impact, emotional pressure, and liquidity constraints can differ materially from live trading. A paper result should therefore be treated as evidence about process consistency—not a guarantee that the same P&L will appear with real money.
Use a scanner-specific scorecard
- Alerts per session
- Percentage of alerts that meet the intended setup
- Time from alert to completed analysis
- Number of trades skipped because the alert arrived too late or lacked liquidity
- Rule deviations
- Whether the watchlist became simpler or more distracting
Trade Ideas includes paper trading in Standard
Trade Ideas’ current Standard plan lists real-time paper trading and in-app trading. That means users can test the scanner core without needing Premium solely for simulation. Premium is relevant when backtesting, Holly AI, or advanced tools are also required.
When to add backtesting
Paper trading observes the live workflow going forward. Backtesting asks how a defined rule behaved on historical data. Use both when they answer different questions, and document their assumptions separately.
Separate process milestones from hypothetical P&L
A useful paper-trading review can declare success even when simulated P&L is unimpressive. Examples include reducing alerts from dozens to a manageable handful, eliminating symbols outside the strategy, following the same entry checklist for every candidate, or discovering that a scan triggers too late for the intended setup. Those findings improve the system even without a “winning” paper result.
Before moving from simulation to live trading, define non-P&L criteria such as rule adherence, alert quality, operational speed, and the ability to stop trading when conditions fall outside the plan. The transition decision should not depend on one unusually good simulated session.
